November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Across South Carolina, too many families know the impact of this disease. Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in our state. Awareness and early action save lives. Together, we can improve the quality and length of life for those at risk and those already diagnosed.

As we observe this important month, we also want to address some of the most common misconceptions about lung cancer. Many people still believe that lung cancer only affects those who smoke, but that’s simply not true. Up to one in five people diagnosed have never smoked. Others think that if they quit years ago, their risk has disappeared, yet screening remains critical for those with a history of smoking. And while some assume that lung cancer is always fatal, we know that early detection saves lives. With improved screening and treatment options, many people are living longer, fuller lives after diagnosis.

Every person impacted by lung cancer deserves compassion, understanding, and access to care and support. By talking openly, sharing facts, and encouraging screening, we can change perceptions — and outcomes — across our state.

How You Can Help This Month

  • Learn the screening guidelines and talk to your doctor if you or a loved one may be eligible.
  • Share SCCA’s posts and resources to reach friends, family, and coworkers.
  • Encourage someone to take the next step — whether that’s scheduling a screening, starting a quit plan, or connecting to support.
  • Invite your workplace, school, faith community, or civic group to host an awareness activity or share materials.
  • Honor a survivor or loved one by attending an event and bringing a friend.

This November, let us turn hope into action for our neighbors. Thank you for standing with the South Carolina Cancer Alliance as we work to prevent cancer, detect it earlier, and support every person and family impacted.

Thank you,
